Aloe Ferox (Cape Aloe)
(Aloe ferox)
📜 Common Names:
Cape Aloe, Bitter Aloe, Red Aloe, Tap Aloe
🌎 Typical Location / Habitat:
Native to South Africa, particularly the Eastern and Western Cape regions. Thrives in dry, rocky hillsides and arid climates.
🌱 About the Plant:
Aloe ferox is a tall, robust species of aloe with thick, spiky leaves and a central spike of brilliant orange-red flowers. While similar to Aloe vera, Aloe ferox contains much higher concentrations of active bitter compounds — particularly in the latex — making it a more potent herb for digestive cleansing, skin healing, and antimicrobial use. Traditionally harvested by cutting the leaves and allowing the bitter sap to dry into a resin, Cape Aloe has been used for centuries as a powerful laxative, wound dressing, and detoxifier.
⚗️ Medicinal Properties:
Laxative (latex): Strong stimulant laxative used in very small doses.
Skin healing (gel): Soothes burns, wounds, eczema, and psoriasis.
Antimicrobial: Fights fungi and bacteria topically and internally.
Anti-inflammatory: Reduces redness and irritation in skin or gut.
Detoxification: Supports bowel cleansing and elimination.
Bitter tonic: Stimulates digestion and bile flow in sluggish systems.
⚠️ Caution:
The latex is very strong and should be used with care. Not recommended for long-term or daily use. Avoid during pregnancy.
🍵 Best Ways to Use:
Powdered resin (latex): Used internally in tiny amounts for cleansing.
Fresh gel (inner leaf): Applied topically for burns and rashes.
Capsules: Encapsulated resin for controlled internal use.
